Journals Help Me Organize My Life

I am someone who needs to feel in control, organized and focused if I am going to be productive in any way and in any area of my life. Over the years, I have always kept two journals. One being like a private diary and the other is what I always referred to as my “control journal.” Yes, I did just make that name up but after talking to a few friends, I realized that many people have these types of notebooks/planners; they are just called something different depending on who is using it. My friend, Amanda, ordered a planner she really wanted and a few days ago, it finally came. As I was listening to her tell me about the new planner and what having a new one meant to her, it reminded me of how much better I always feel when I write in my control journal.

When I am not doing well, I don’t take the time to write in that type of journal. I don’t take the time to color coordinate my different sections of the notebook, or make sure my pen and highlighter match perfectly. I simply don’t care. Not just about the journal, but about anything. Hearing my friend talk about the new planner she ordered, and having it remind me that I always like to think that a new journal signifies a fresh start to me, I started writing in a new notebook yesterday.

Notebooks, journals and planners may not be your thing but what it represents is the need for all of us to feel in control of our lives and feel like we are somewhat settled. Those feelings have been pretty foreign to me over the years for obvious reasons. I have tried to learn to take one day at a time. It was a concept that always made sense to me but I could never stop myself from thinking weeks or even months in advance. Looking at each day individually and trying to make it the best day it possibly can be is a wonderful start to having a great life.

SO, if notebooks, planners, and journals aren’t your cup of tea…try to look for other ways that may help to bring a sense of calm to your chaotic world and busy days.  It really does make a huge difference for me and certainly can’t hurt anyone who is willing to give it a try.
